I've made it long, short, as a shirt, in patterns and solids and I still don't feel like I have tapped into all I love about it.<br />
Here are some versions I have made:<br />
<br />
This was the first one that I made, in drapery/bottomweight fabric. I immediately loved it and made a second one in double gauze (more on that one in a separate post).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicCKBFjJWllkKeE-L2QqXa4SAgy7W5h-cBF-0hiV3cNNkGV4qJwbVGG-03-o0N6am64wQbjvreFa1xrUXtlwwWqRG-ioXbzMiJoSqCvJokXPjXiPEJx-HnHpLnS481LIeaqOa1MT8wCNBD/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252814%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="781" data-original-width="629" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicCKBFjJWllkKeE-L2QqXa4SAgy7W5h-cBF-0hiV3cNNkGV4qJwbVGG-03-o0N6am64wQbjvreFa1xrUXtlwwWqRG-ioXbzMiJoSqCvJokXPjXiPEJx-HnHpLnS481LIeaqOa1MT8wCNBD/s320/FullSizeRender+%252814%2529.jpg" width="257" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrFisiHxIDIDoKZtP9Qqbu2RAgPGuJUPGq7k-itC02hK4tieoQJS11xwQ8yju16QI0JU8-_ab4jSjmNCL8FQGjzJFkLmp6BSAYTjKVdjBE9OwuNq9-C2LI-bIwjC1lKz-_fgowot8ikByC/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252815%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="639" data-original-width="630" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrFisiHxIDIDoKZtP9Qqbu2RAgPGuJUPGq7k-itC02hK4tieoQJS11xwQ8yju16QI0JU8-_ab4jSjmNCL8FQGjzJFkLmp6BSAYTjKVdjBE9OwuNq9-C2LI-bIwjC1lKz-_fgowot8ikByC/s320/FullSizeRender+%252815%2529.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I decided I wanted to make a dressier version in a black cotton with subtle dots woven into it. I don't know what this fabric is called, but I bought it at <a href="http://www.thefabricstoreusa.com/" target="_blank">The Fabric Store</a>, which is a beautiful store near my home. I have a number of fabric stores near my home in Mid-City LA, but The Fabric Store is top notch. They're also super nice in there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsovP-8awA4urbpWc7t8e_edchk45IP5qCLa6HY7HO_BaNeBeu0QrFc2xlY6J_M5K_t-MXD_WpjxmqFUIIQlb_tkAtU3qzW33O4N3f3fUnFkIk2OGCz803j6a9OvYi-_iRtwRkfs9U4xeV/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252819%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="668" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsovP-8awA4urbpWc7t8e_edchk45IP5qCLa6HY7HO_BaNeBeu0QrFc2xlY6J_M5K_t-MXD_WpjxmqFUIIQlb_tkAtU3qzW33O4N3f3fUnFkIk2OGCz803j6a9OvYi-_iRtwRkfs9U4xeV/s320/FullSizeRender+%252819%2529.jpg" width="133" /></a></div>
<br />
I also made one in a slubbed chambray for my daughter, but after she picked the fabric, oohed and aaaahed at the finished product and promptly stuffed it into her closet for weeks on end, I reclaimed it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSoVVx_8Q5nWzNJAq9qi6td-sJ6jfXNuh1zLupcPaQdTZovjHMBaEDGm717CQmaxxSxBjJWA9XLbYqmM9ESwFIVs_YO6Hgism4V8yf44dBdraWwjeKZkM96NvdTwgX1n7K8GhfwxXNKpf/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252813%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="783" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSoVVx_8Q5nWzNJAq9qi6td-sJ6jfXNuh1zLupcPaQdTZovjHMBaEDGm717CQmaxxSxBjJWA9XLbYqmM9ESwFIVs_YO6Hgism4V8yf44dBdraWwjeKZkM96NvdTwgX1n7K8GhfwxXNKpf/s320/FullSizeRender+%252813%2529.jpg" width="261" /></a></div>
<br />
After this, I decided to try something really nuts. What about this pattern in drop cloth fabric? Extra wide seam allowances and serged edges (plus the fabric was washed and dried 3-5 times before I cut into it, making it really soft...) and now I have the more amazingly comfy top. (Next attempt will be to dye with the drop cloth before I sew one up)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinebv37KINK3GjiTuK3NrdlhSHGgLkSJF8cmiN5vC7mofZLEdgyqNR9_HdxxC5C3mWStyNQJN-k9I5vOzJL16HEWUaWkR_PAqKFt7rD2nfC31fX30p6N2tqp-KSw5eJjFTQjlBb6hsJRDo/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252816%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="636" data-original-width="628" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinebv37KINK3GjiTuK3NrdlhSHGgLkSJF8cmiN5vC7mofZLEdgyqNR9_HdxxC5C3mWStyNQJN-k9I5vOzJL16HEWUaWkR_PAqKFt7rD2nfC31fX30p6N2tqp-KSw5eJjFTQjlBb6hsJRDo/s320/FullSizeRender+%252816%2529.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<br />
Then in the middle of all of this, I went on an amazing trip to South Africa where I picked up some shwe shwe fabric specifically for the purpose of sewing one of these up. Red is my favorite color, but I usually wear black and gray, so this is very bright for me, but I do love it a lot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK3Zby4GW8QYcNdtJKUH_HTCNieJx8kHRv-kBvBkq-8LdE0p1ciAVa5ju62tVQngxAuFShx8iJBNSI8N2loFeyp_VW8rufTxSqX2OYi0Vh5JWC8V0uaKbq1mgD8ZvTvSXVGc2iqpx7GCjf/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252812%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="625" data-original-width="640" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK3Zby4GW8QYcNdtJKUH_HTCNieJx8kHRv-kBvBkq-8LdE0p1ciAVa5ju62tVQngxAuFShx8iJBNSI8N2loFeyp_VW8rufTxSqX2OYi0Vh5JWC8V0uaKbq1mgD8ZvTvSXVGc2iqpx7GCjf/s320/FullSizeRender+%252812%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also plan to make a short sleeved version of this and also a cap sleeved maxi dress. I'll post when I do.</div>

Last summer I was talking with a friend about her work that she does with teen moms at St. Anne's which is a home for teen moms and at risk mothers and children. I was really inspired by the joy that she was bringing to the young women there and asked her if there was anything I could do.<br />

She told me that the girls had very plain housing arrangements and we devised a plan to bring some sunshine into their world. That was where I came up with the #sunnyroompillowdrive.<br />

<br />
I got the LAMQG involved and put the word out to other quilters around the country through Instagram. In the end, we collected over 50 handmade pillows for the young mothers to each get one to have in their rooms with them - to know that they are loved and cared for.<br />

It was a line that was a little out of my comfort zone as far as being floral - which I don't often sew with - but I had fun seeing what my patterns would look like in a whole new style.<br />

I used to post a lot on here with something to the effect of "I have the coolest friends." (It's been so long since I have blogged regularly that I have forgotten the tags I used...) What's really great is that I still have the coolest friends. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my dearest friends is someone that I met through quilting. She was one of the founders of the Modern Quilt Guild and her talent never ceases to inspire. Latifah is a creative force unto herself. She is also one of the most loving and faithful friends I have had in my life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One day when she was at my house for lunch about a year ago, she mentioned to me that she was going to be launching a fabric line with<a href="http://www.hoffmanfabrics.com/"> Hoffman Fabrics,</a> known for their surf fabrics and batiks, but definitely not well known for modern fabrics. I was immediately intrigued by the alliance and couldn't wait to see what they came up with together. (They have since launched the <a href="http://www.meandyoufabrics.com/">amazing Me + You batik fabric line</a> which is breathtakingly beautiful - simple, clean and modern)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But then Latifah was going to try a whole new thing.... She was going to be their step into modern printed fabric.... and she did not disappoint! Well - here it is. <a href="http://www.meandyoufabrics.com/#!grafic/ic6uf">Grafic Fabric has arrived</a>. It is absolutely my favorite fabric line ever and I was so deeply honored that Latifah would ask me to be a part of creating products with her line before it was released so I could participate in <a href="https://issuu.com/latifahsaafirstudios/docs/grafic_lookbook">her lookbook - see it here, it's amazing.</a> The thing about these prints is that they are so beautiful - somehow both sophisticated and gritty at the same time - the colors are sublime and I love the patterns so much. She somehow captured the urban grit of the city and street art and telephone wires and made it into something that is restrained and elegant. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have so many more projects that I intend to make with her fabrics, but here are the four that I made for her book. Naturally, I thought that my <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/still-waters-quilt-by-libby-dibby/202243">Still Waters Quilt</a> would really highlight her different prints, so I made two of them. I also made a <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/home-decor/pucker-up-pillow/204160">Pucker Up Pillow</a> for Latifah as a gift and then made a second Pucker Up Panel and used it as the pocket detail for a <a href="http://noodle-head.com/2013/05/super-tote-pattern.html">Super Tote (pattern by Anna Graham of Noodlehead)</a> for a swap partner and friend. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My pal, <a href="http://undercovercrafter.blogspot.com/">Hollie</a>, and I snapped a photo of the big Still Waters Quilt by the Cabazon dinosaurs recently when we were on a road trip, but Latifah took the rest of the pics and I can't believe how fun all the projects look.</div>

<br />
I had seen smocking a few years ago on a quilt and though I had no idea how to do it, I made up my own way and began to make these pillows for our home.<br />
<br />
People have asked me for a while to write a pattern for these and I finally have. It's kind of addicting to make actually.... I bet if you make one, you can't help but to make more. Seriously.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/home-decor/pucker-up-pillow/204160">YOU CAN FIND THE PATTERN HERE.</a><br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are also some really fun ways to make use of the Pucker Up panel itself... I've used it as the front panel for a bag, but here are some images from of of my pattern testers who got really creative!</div>

Click here for the real post - which includes my tips for quilting with double gauze...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Y0StJ2BNLiCpjryJ713cEkYZ-KCE1Uotf4d0VQUMohboY8B9vV6inHOoTnhI2Ah9C-1QQgEhU36rZD1VkmoCS2gCW4awKqTeFb8IiNSfiCGNaQYfm4qiQeg3dCOPBbMQCKaoXXIWUd7H/s1600/IMG_2009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Y0StJ2BNLiCpjryJ713cEkYZ-KCE1Uotf4d0VQUMohboY8B9vV6inHOoTnhI2Ah9C-1QQgEhU36rZD1VkmoCS2gCW4awKqTeFb8IiNSfiCGNaQYfm4qiQeg3dCOPBbMQCKaoXXIWUd7H/s320/IMG_2009.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
What's fun is that the minute I was on their website looking at what they had available in their new double gauze line, this quilt design popped into my head.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO16UP6yxYo5kmrnVhtjQIil4009x4cVmEg-udHYmBnir1laqDOE-M-e-Z2coJ2VYOpY_-6p4Ro0pq1byZa5EgQguCKS6QyYq-W9cjPPWgtIkTwbNx4d7jWf8v7oWPwl3E4mqTWFiEAGT_/s1600/IMG_2007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO16UP6yxYo5kmrnVhtjQIil4009x4cVmEg-udHYmBnir1laqDOE-M-e-Z2coJ2VYOpY_-6p4Ro0pq1byZa5EgQguCKS6QyYq-W9cjPPWgtIkTwbNx4d7jWf8v7oWPwl3E4mqTWFiEAGT_/s320/IMG_2007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved making the quilt so much that I wrote a free pattern for it.<br />

I drew it up, measured it out, and then sewed nothing of it. Then my quilt guild, the LAMQG, had a solids challenge with a deadline this past March and I knew it was finally time to make this thing.<br />
I've never been one for small quilts, I can't help but to think, "if I'm making this out<br />
of fabric, someone should at least be able to cuddle up under it if they ever wanted to..." - so I made it big. (I kind of end up doing that with every quilt I make)<br />
<br />
Here are pics of my original #stillwatersquilt with both of my boys for scale<br />

I finished it in time for our challenge and then two days later I broke my femur falling down the stairs. That was not fun. What was actually pretty great about the 8 weeks that I spent on the couch was that it gave me time to create - time to draw, take some online classes and eventually even sew a little. But this was my favorite part of that - I finally had the time to sit down and write a quilt pattern. One that was not for a company to use and then call their own, but for me to release myself and then launch on craftsy. I had been so encouraged by the success of free downloads by the Flip Flop Quilt Block - which was basically a little sister to this quilt idea, that I knew I had to try to make a pattern that I could sell. I simplified the shapes and measurements to make it even more user-friendly and now it has launched. I'm so happy every time someone downloads a copy. It makes me thrilled to know that I am a part of someone else's creative process.<br />

Here are some of my favorite images of the #stillwatersquilt as made by my pattern testers. Almost all of them ended up making more than one of the quilt - they were so excited about how fast it came together. The pattern has sizes from crib sized to king sized included and the simplicity makes it a great quilt to give as a gift.<br />

Someone else had backed out and there was no one to finish off the 12th month of the project. It wasn't something that I thought I had the confidence to try, but I am so glad I was asked, because it pushed me to try something new. As you will see over the next few posts, this little block has changed a lot for me!<br />
<br />
I went back to my sketches and found that I had a quilt design that had never come to fruition. It seemed a little bit clever to me, so I decided it might work and chose to simplify it and make a little sister version to it that could be a simple block design for my fellow guild members.<br />
<br />

<h4>
Thus the Flip Flop Quilt Block was born. </h4>
<h4>
<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/other/flip-flop-quilt-block/189754">(YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT HERE)</a></h4>
My guild seemed to like it so I opened up a little<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/1273339/pattern-store?_ct=fqjjuhd-ijehu&_ctp=204160,1273339"> craftsy pattern store</a> and uploaded it. What I didn't expect was for it to downloaded every single day by multiple people. I couldn't believe that it was that popular!<br />

The block is simple - even a beginner can have a fun time making it and there are a lot of cool ways to lay it out.<br />

There are entire books devoted to what to sew for a guy... My brother in law was turning 40 last year and I wanted to make something special for him. So I used two of the most masculine fabric lines I knew to create something for him - I used a charm pack of Architextures and a strip roll of World Tour by David Butler for his Parson Grey line. The end result was so beautiful. I made simple improv log cabin blocks which are a real favorite for me and on the back I used my leftovers to make one giant Log Mansion. In the end, I couldn't decide if I liked the back even more than the front.libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-17615613064116623322015-05-01T17:57:00.000-07:002015-05-01T17:58:03.978-07:00An experimental mini quilt <p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaArJvu0RfEURJ_26xoRr-okHsoicfvZa-LwGa5fPzBxHvB5pXI5YMSkr1EW71kv3qpu4hbtIweoQwSrrp3prvi5Gwi1bE_5OlCvsIFwCdolsYw60_PicnIDzmGQUFXsb6sg71QTwTE07H/s1600/IMG_1797-783979.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaArJvu0RfEURJ_26xoRr-okHsoicfvZa-LwGa5fPzBxHvB5pXI5YMSkr1EW71kv3qpu4hbtIweoQwSrrp3prvi5Gwi1bE_5OlCvsIFwCdolsYw60_PicnIDzmGQUFXsb6sg71QTwTE07H/s320/IMG_1797-783979.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6144072199940396354" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie-oZBMZcygR6iGrKLbcbBwJfwC_94b6wkv2rmNj38_ecnRYcFCpms4FCYG74IiZY7Ney0CbV-D5Qk5vGwzfMSn2UEIHwymMTs_baQJo_qCAGlhA51sYN1cM1Ey6gjWO2A-UtFpy1vHSki/s1600/IMG_1820-786959.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie-oZBMZcygR6iGrKLbcbBwJfwC_94b6wkv2rmNj38_ecnRYcFCpms4FCYG74IiZY7Ney0CbV-D5Qk5vGwzfMSn2UEIHwymMTs_baQJo_qCAGlhA51sYN1cM1Ey6gjWO2A-UtFpy1vHSki/s320/IMG_1820-786959.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6144072209203282274" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcsa-Q_WWKssdMzshog9z0aXz6gjGJfXxkFM86lUDVCVVhGi56Vj_-bv6hV3P3R4kHdRji7RBDl6rVStxxM1WP9a01s8Jp_LjQvVIG1VSMAqBEl2ito9F6aKlXInXdc-qUR4ejvk8NHVSY/s1600/IMG_1902-790097.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcsa-Q_WWKssdMzshog9z0aXz6gjGJfXxkFM86lUDVCVVhGi56Vj_-bv6hV3P3R4kHdRji7RBDl6rVStxxM1WP9a01s8Jp_LjQvVIG1VSMAqBEl2ito9F6aKlXInXdc-qUR4ejvk8NHVSY/s320/IMG_1902-790097.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6144072223546418018" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZpElBz9OvmHnULe7bCyskSFiO8rUU8sk88I5k6neBJ_ZroHcyzkxVCy7nCj-WXkdxzl7zwgQgjjb0agTyf8poGkWollFEka-qZxn0bzLpIlVIG4meEBSE_gHhd3B7N4KzzFgquulF5fd/s1600/IMG_2160-793336.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZpElBz9OvmHnULe7bCyskSFiO8rUU8sk88I5k6neBJ_ZroHcyzkxVCy7nCj-WXkdxzl7zwgQgjjb0agTyf8poGkWollFEka-qZxn0bzLpIlVIG4meEBSE_gHhd3B7N4KzzFgquulF5fd/s320/IMG_2160-793336.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6144072235442357234" /></a></p>I'm not really one to make small quilts. I really like things best when they are big and useful. But the truth is that I also find it hard to pack a punch into something small enough to make it worth the effort.
<br>This little quilt is something of an experiment, something I want to try big, but had to try small first to see if it worked.
<br>I wanted to incorporate my doodle drawings into my hand quilting and see what black thread looked like against a lighter background too. I also tried doubling the pearl cotton to see if liked that (not a ton, though I love the look)... So basically I needed to try all those things smaller... Also, I'd heard that Crayola washable market is a great way to mark a quilt, but was afraid to try on something big... It didn't fully wash out, so I'm glad it was a small project...
<br>
<br>And then... At the end, I have this little beauty. Which I love. And don't really know what to do with except pin it to the wall in the studio to think of more ideas... I do think we we all be seeing more quilting like this in my future though!libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-3526070016210416602015-04-17T16:27:00.000-07:002015-04-17T16:28:05.758-07:00Quilting for work vs fun<p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPvZDvV623LOiU724bfGCZcdmFAzNlkcX7k6DQ_Dhc1yGv4i3d7oWoDpGX_zHI1_468hhefDG6DFe_x6uckqVLC2x8wytonOH7WN_5CCMvmni7Z6M5rfdAJzb-pSk4IJeBPSvnd1C-Dh1j/s1600/IMG_1968-785759.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPvZDvV623LOiU724bfGCZcdmFAzNlkcX7k6DQ_Dhc1yGv4i3d7oWoDpGX_zHI1_468hhefDG6DFe_x6uckqVLC2x8wytonOH7WN_5CCMvmni7Z6M5rfdAJzb-pSk4IJeBPSvnd1C-Dh1j/s320/IMG_1968-785759.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6138853821067169538" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7TtgaY0Xgyo6qvaBus8McRFxw20sKJhR60jpVuyHAb78_h1x5RrzxOuq74nm6SsnHfJV6EvV3p5OyS-4-JAoCEoXWEz6MWPmijf7zCgANcSv0tnApTudTwLTNXsEJSDdiy43Wrrs-Q8bU/s1600/IMG_1971-790411.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7TtgaY0Xgyo6qvaBus8McRFxw20sKJhR60jpVuyHAb78_h1x5RrzxOuq74nm6SsnHfJV6EvV3p5OyS-4-JAoCEoXWEz6MWPmijf7zCgANcSv0tnApTudTwLTNXsEJSDdiy43Wrrs-Q8bU/s320/IMG_1971-790411.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6138853836827929074" /></a></p>On my machine today... A custom quilt for a customer. It's not my color comfort zone and I'm learning a lot about equilateral triangles, but I'm enjoying it. I know I've mentioned here that I'm committed to working on things that inspire me from here on out... Here's a funny fact... The part of me that used to be a corporate designer - working with customers to get them a custom solution... Still inspires me too.
<br>
<br>So I have my art side, and also my "designer" side - both of which I love. I'm just committed to not make things that DON'T inspire me anymore just because I had fabric lying around that I needed to use up. I've done that for years... I've played with the idea that it takes the "Q" out of Quilting and it changes it into a "G".... i.e. GUILTING... Not a fun hobby.
<br>
<br>So here's to less Guilting and more Quilting, whether it's for fun or money. And always finding the joy in what's in front of us.libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-25481646078674352372015-03-25T05:00:00.000-07:002015-03-25T05:35:13.949-07:00The Betsy Travel Bag (Blog Hop)<br />

I am really excited to be a part of the Betsy Travel Bag blog hop! When I
was first chosen to be one of the pattern testers, I found it so hard to
pick out my fabrics... There were so many great places on this bag to
stick little coordinating prints without looking cheesy or overwrought.<br />
I
finally decided on a Denyse Schmidt print that I kept ordering without
ever realizing I'd double and triple ordered it. I figured that I must
really love that fabric if I kept on ordering it, accidentally. And then with this fun newsprint as an accent... I started to get really excited.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF7UcnJYVy0TmPwGLLOvhNyzNqcrGgvOu4_MWFO7JqxKjB9MM3Mr_iFKJEWVUJMgYmih9cZUb3ivFYh7Y5q2WpFzfBYCod_f8q-m4l3AHni1yG0Alik_6rhfSPI6lMc8R9TPaf1QQqnST4/s1600/IMG_0424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF7UcnJYVy0TmPwGLLOvhNyzNqcrGgvOu4_MWFO7JqxKjB9MM3Mr_iFKJEWVUJMgYmih9cZUb3ivFYh7Y5q2WpFzfBYCod_f8q-m4l3AHni1yG0Alik_6rhfSPI6lMc8R9TPaf1QQqnST4/s1600/IMG_0424.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
I
got to work on it as soon as I worked out the fabric choices and got my
hardware. (On a side note, one of my biggest notes to the pattern company was that
"someone should sell hardware kits for the Betsy Travel Bag so sewists
don't have to find everything themselves" (that was ALREADY their plan.
Lucky for you - you can find them at the Snuggly Monkey Shop www.snugglymonkey.com... I had to order bulk of most of my hardware (not really a
problem since I have already made two of these bags with plans for at
least 2 more)</div>
<div>
Back to the bag.... As I was making it, I had to
marvel at all the cool pockets and features I was putting in. I told
someone, "it's like a catalogue of all the coolest pocket techniques".
One night when the bag was nearly complete, my husband came in and saw
it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKBH3HnkqMMVyq-grrCLTyIO0iuFSPh1UGTGE15AzP6iKSmFmnb8c8XeDHRw9ndOHloRpHWgEHmI0LPSfUxeR2fB6Z__RAaj4G5VhtfpTo5Ehh3jk2zp-jiXncGVgTrzq_r6pGPvdFhRA/s1600/IMG_0475.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKBH3HnkqMMVyq-grrCLTyIO0iuFSPh1UGTGE15AzP6iKSmFmnb8c8XeDHRw9ndOHloRpHWgEHmI0LPSfUxeR2fB6Z__RAaj4G5VhtfpTo5Ehh3jk2zp-jiXncGVgTrzq_r6pGPvdFhRA/s1600/IMG_0475.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The way he looked at it told me that he didn't think this looked
like an ordinary quilted duffel bag. He was really impressed with how
"professional" it looked - I think it was all the nice hardware,
personally.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1-DMov-Mz9DhTEPBt3SRjKnzmo1tHSAJMtUShMLp9AoYszSwjfOPJtmuAevuxqba2dh5cgaN_r5A6phRISF6T2glZjIFUFpjyqKWYnrz-Dklq5-W37Hgdd0xI3UsrOpiKg9Q3MBwNd0Mr/s1600/IMG_0636.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1-DMov-Mz9DhTEPBt3SRjKnzmo1tHSAJMtUShMLp9AoYszSwjfOPJtmuAevuxqba2dh5cgaN_r5A6phRISF6T2glZjIFUFpjyqKWYnrz-Dklq5-W37Hgdd0xI3UsrOpiKg9Q3MBwNd0Mr/s1600/IMG_0636.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I began to think... Could I figure out a way to make him a
masculine GUY version of the Betsy Travel Bag? How would I go about
that?</div>
<div>
Valentine's Day was coming up... Could I do it? I had
just bought some gorgeous prewashed chambray from a friend who had a
bolt...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went into my local quilt shop, <a href="http://www.sewmodernonline.com/">Sew Modern</a>, and there got the advice and idea to accent with Moleskin
fabric. I picked a solid charcoal color. Then I added in some of my
favorite old fake herringbone tweed cotton that I have yards of here at
home and I cranked on this gorgeous bag and presented it to my husband
on Valentine's Day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I have to say, it's the nicest thing I have ever
sewn for him. His comment.... "Wow. That does not look homemade. It
looks like something they would sell at Fred Segal" - kind of a
mega-compliment in my book.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I liked his bag so much (more
even than my own!) that I used it to travel to Quiltcon. While traveling
with it, I learned even more how much I loved this bag. All the
pockets! The straps! The style!</div>
<div>
And the whole guy factor is
such a major bonus for me. I mean, how many quilted items can you really give
the men in your life? Only a few. Well, this is one of them. But then again, I'm feeling like this bag would also look SO GOOD in metallic linen... hmmmm....</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
So now it's your turn! You know you want to make one... You can buy the pattern in the Rebel Craft Media shop - <a href="http://www.rebelcraftmedia.com/shop">www.rebelcraftmedia.com/shop</a> - The pattern is being released in a few days on April 1 and there's even a sew-along on the Rebel Craft blog that starts on April 2. (Pre-order sales for the pattern started March 17th - you can buy it and get the materials list before the pattern is released so that you can assemble your supplies)<br />
Also check out this hashtag - #thebetsytravelbag to see other people's pics of the bag - some of the details are best understood by looking at what the bag looks like finished.<br />

I'm committing to this idea of not making something that doesn't have my voice in it in some form. Im tired of making things that anyone else could have made. I'm not saying that every single project has to have improvisational piecing... Or curves, or hand quilting or lots of grays and reds... Maybe the only thing that says I made it is the way I put the colors together, but I think I'm tired of making the same stuff as anyone else. I am an artist with a voice that I already know how to express, so why have I not been doing that? These are the thoughts floating around in my head this week...
<br />
<br />
This little pillow has spring out of that internal conversation. It's an old block I made with scraps... It was sitting in my studio over a year... Just sitting. And with about 3 hours of work, I have finished it and made it something I am proud of.

<br />
I feel like I want to ask myself ... What makes this project "Libby" - this one? It's the analogous color scheme... The way I always put colors in families. There's a little bit of improv in the way I put the log cabin together and the hand quilting was very spontaneous in its construction.

Lots of sewing. In the past two days, I've dealt with stuff by sewing. It's the old joke that my sewing machine is the one thing in my life that I feel I can truly control.
<br />
So in 48 hours, I've made 3 baby quilt tops.... I've also basted two of those and a twin sized quilt (an old unfinished one that I started in my first months of quilting -it's really boring compared to what I want to be making) ... And now I've quilted two of the baby quilts and this orphan block which is destined to become a pillow....I've even attached bindings too. Tons of really brainless sewing... My new machine has arrived and I have a load of new ideas I want to try out, but I didn't have space to put it in the studio without clearing up some space first... I think I needed the mental space too. I haven't made a quilt in many months and need to get a bit reacquainted with the process.
<br />
<br />
I've been thinking a lot about my process too. Going to Quiltcon was really good for me this last month because I became more clear on the path I want to take as I move forward in my quilting. For years, I have put off my most creative ideas as I have cranked through fabric that people have given me... For some reason, gifted random fabric has always screamed at me loudest - "use me up! Find a use for me!" Even louder than fabrics that I treasure and bought myself. Perhaps I just wanted to use things before they go to waste. A part of me looks at the challenge and says... "Can you make something good or even beautiful from something you don't like?"
<br />
But I'm tired of that process now.
<br />
I want to work with things that inspire me now... And I'm getting tired of never using what I love the most... These quilts have been a good exercise for me to realize that just scrapping along isn't doing it for me anymore. My most favorite quilts started with a true idea and even when they were done, I wanted to make them again. So these 4-5 little projects here are a bit of a swan song to my old process. And I like that.
<br />
<br />
I just need to hold myself to it.libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-77172324511900730532015-03-09T10:06:00.000-07:002015-03-22T21:53:10.508-07:00Teaching collage as Art Therapy - Camp Ronald McDonald<br />
This past year, just before I was getting too pregnant to leave town comfortably,
I was given the opportunity to teach a collage art therapy
workshop for 30 grieving parents. It was in Idylwild at Camp Ronald McDonald and the group I was working with was a very nurturing group for parents who had lost children to brain cancer. Talk about wanting to be prepared to say and do the right things as I led. I felt like my own (lesser) experiences with grief and loss over these past few years and how art and collage had helped me to work through a lot of it - gave me a place to work from as I instructed these families. I brought in a couple of my own works - specifically ones that showed my healing process over losing baby G and prepared a mix of music to work with that was both thoughtful and cheerful for promoting the creative process.<br />

It was a very moving and precious afternoon.
It was also the largest group I've taught and some of the participants
had to be won over to the activity as it wasn't really something that <span class="text_exposed_show">they had specifically paid for or signed up for. In fact, some of the dads were really skeptical at first and attended a bit begrudgingly, but as the afternoon progressed, they were the ones that got the most out of the experience (at least from what they told me).<br /> </span><br />

top and asked to "repair" it. I'm not sure if the owner even knew it was
only an unfinished quilt top, and not a finished quilt until I told
her. It was in bad shape.<br /> I consulted my friends, quilty experts and
contacts, including art restorers, wardrobe experts, people who market
professional textile cleaning products. And then I dug in to the mess. I
had to hand wash it 4 times in Soak textile wash just to<span class="text_exposed_show">
get it clean enough to work on. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZWSXIIiFMesVukPx2PcWBf2954BinmvY9zchOKRH1XS1GoApr9_UqodMzfFJKy4ZxChVA4-97tIOn4qn9zlmyu_nPlBaBSSZCGzQBDwRn_CotkhsuqZNQl5eHUu_sCKAMy1q_yqnaJOb0/s1600/IMG_3983.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZWSXIIiFMesVukPx2PcWBf2954BinmvY9zchOKRH1XS1GoApr9_UqodMzfFJKy4ZxChVA4-97tIOn4qn9zlmyu_nPlBaBSSZCGzQBDwRn_CotkhsuqZNQl5eHUu_sCKAMy1q_yqnaJOb0/s1600/IMG_3983.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span class="text_exposed_show">Then I bought vintage feedsack scraps
on eBay and made little patches for the really bad holes. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVgZLy06LDSBFiOlbzmUdQ9QNOQxgoZrtddZ7apEtTxPjOwbAoWc2bQXFDVkMmF4P6pcDb9O0WEu1Hceth_3HS1GzswKhuw26k4YrvwponKmZi2J9gcAqivJDwtSqkQR6EKABCdN3ywEc5/s1600/IMG_3996.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVgZLy06LDSBFiOlbzmUdQ9QNOQxgoZrtddZ7apEtTxPjOwbAoWc2bQXFDVkMmF4P6pcDb9O0WEu1Hceth_3HS1GzswKhuw26k4YrvwponKmZi2J9gcAqivJDwtSqkQR6EKABCdN3ywEc5/s1600/IMG_3996.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<span class="text_exposed_show">There was lots
of hand sewing to be done and much going back as I'd see more holes,
ripped seams and tears, but slowly it began to come together. <br /> I fell in love with the fabrics the more I worked with them, and found little gems and favorite spots throughout the quilt.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFZjAZxeGaUD3F-1Jh_VeKcuJUdnuQXpr2p5VY2eVPBMqqGHixkxYT8A93k1Fs5lQUPS0BEszJQAgxaue16JdIR-OKeofprQyRLK39A-pnFEB-fz_GpNDMj0ATJtUxDTsl4BrPLDuMWHSb/s1600/IMG_3989.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFZjAZxeGaUD3F-1Jh_VeKcuJUdnuQXpr2p5VY2eVPBMqqGHixkxYT8A93k1Fs5lQUPS0BEszJQAgxaue16JdIR-OKeofprQyRLK39A-pnFEB-fz_GpNDMj0ATJtUxDTsl4BrPLDuMWHSb/s1600/IMG_3989.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<span class="text_exposed_show"><br />
The more I worked with it, the more I wished I could speak to the woman
who made it... The whole process felt like a conversation I was having
with her. There was a distinct primitive beauty about it... I can't help
but wonder if this was the only quilt this sewist ever made. So many
quilter rules were broken (which reminded me a lot of the natural beauty
in the quilts of Gees Bend) and I just loved the innocence of it all.
As I finished the quilt, I didn't square it up, I left the edges all
wobbly and dealt with the wrinkles that were there as part of the
design. I told the customer that these were beautiful and should be
preserved as the voice of the original artist.<br /> What a joy it was to
finish it. I quilted it really tightly and backed it with Denyse
Schmidt's Greenfield Hill line, a vintage inspired line that matched
really well.... When it was finally finished, it was strong and safe
enough to wash thoroughly with some of my favorite handmade laundry
detergent... And what came out of my dryer at the end was gorgeous. It was an absolute delight to work on.</span><br />

They gave me some fabric from their lines and asked me to design a pattern that would work with the product. These are the two I made for them. The process of designing and writing the patterns was really fun for me. Both patterns can be found for free at the Robert Kaufman website and they are not hard to make at all.<br />

<br />
Here's a post of the quilt I made up to the last minute as I left for the hospital to have baby Dax.<br />
<br />
====================<br />
Here is the last quilt I finished before going into the hospital to give
birth... It started off a few years ago as 4 leftover blocks from the
quilt I made for <span class="text_exposed_show">our foster baby as he
left our home... Then I made it into a small (too small) top. For
years I would pull it out and try different borders onto it to try and
make it bigger, but none of them worked. I finally pulled it out
recently and found some fabrics I liked for it. I decided to hand quilt
it, since it had been a while since I had hand quilted a project, and
then when it was getting close to done, I couldn't imagine parting with
it... So it had to be finished before baby came home. <br /> I "may have"
actually (read: I DID) delayed our departure to the hospital by 15-20 minutes as I
begged Jay to understand that I needed to finish this binding before we
left.<br /> In the end, I could have brought it with me and worked on it
for the next 24 hours before I finally had my c-section to get this
little guy out...</span><br />

I love chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. I think they might be my favorite. I also love oatmeal in general, though until now there haven't been very many oatmeal fans in our house. Z has always liked oatmeal... I was sad when he stopped calling it "opee-mo", but Jay and Mimi aren't big fans. Until now.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since I'm breastfeeding and wanting to keep my milk supply up, I was looking for less tired and time consuming oatmeal recipes online. I stumbled onto a chocolate chip baked oatmeal recipe that seemed good, but it was a bake-for-one thing by a single girl who clearly had more control over her mornings than I do. I need something good and fast.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I messed with her recipe... Doubling/tripling it, adding things... Cutting out a lot of the sugar... And came up with something so good that I look forward to eating it every morning. And all I have to do is unwrap my little frozen tin foil square and microwave it for 1min 20sec. And my oatmeal hating husband loves it too... And pickiest of all, Mimi, will eat it (though few things tear her from her morning bagel and cream cheese)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The most recent batches have added in chia seeds for health reasons, but I've found they add some nice crunch too. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's the recipe:</div>

<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(130, 98, 83, 0.0980392); color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">

Soak chia in milk for five minutes while you combine all of the dry ingredients. Then mix it up really well since the chia tends to clump.</div>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(130, 98, 83, 0.0980392); color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">

I cook at least 30 minutes in my convection oven until done.</div>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(130, 98, 83, 0.0980392); color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">

After the oatmeal has cooled (I usually eat one serving while it's hot, because it's so yummy, I can't wait) I usually cut it into little squares wrap it in tinfoil and put them in the freezer then I can pull out one serving of cake for breakfast every morning I usually microwave it for one minute and 20 seconds. I find the recipe makes about 9-12 servings, depending how you slice it ++UPDATE! - I'M NOW MAKING THIS IN A SILCONE MUFFIN TIN - WAY EASIER TO GET PORTIONS EQUAL AND EASIER TO CLEAN UP. I GET ABOUT 15-16 LITTLE SERVINGS++</div>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(130, 98, 83, 0.0980392); color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">

Many times when I am working on a project, some scraps will fall to the side and will end up becoming random quilt blocks. As I spent my last few months before having the baby, last year, I became driven to use up whatever unfinished blocks and quilts and projects I could find. I came up with the hashtag #crazypregnantladysewing and posted my ridiculously prolific work on there. Insomnia helped with that too... One of those projects was this sweet surf turned quilt ... These four very simple blocks had been sitting neglected after another baby boy quilt was made a year earlier, and so I turned them into a surfy baby quilt for a baby boy born to an old friend of mine. It was backed with the softest brushed cotton and gifted just in time for both of us to have our little guys.<br />

I've made a couple different styles of fabric baskets and recently needed a gift so I decided to make another one. But I wanted something that was a little stiffer than the ones I had made before, so I opted this time for a pattern I saw in an Instagram feed... The #sturdyfabricbasket by LillyElla's World - click this link for the pattern (<a href="http://lillyella.blogspot.com/2014/12/sturdy-fabric-basket-tutorial.html?m=1)">http://lillyella.blogspot.com/2014/12/sturdy-fabric-basket-tutorial.html?m=1)</a>- it was a fast and easy pattern and I had fun filling the end result with goodies for the gifted one and remotes (!) for my practice one... My favorite part is the $2.50 thrifted leather belt that I used for handles...libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-63168568537897959552015-02-07T11:42:00.000-08:002015-03-02T09:04:36.678-08:00Twin sized quilts for twins <p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI-COOacdmW0Yh9A7krwMyRKzyJ8MAvZonOoweytCS7DFAZwZAIanqBD5DX6adsN0HRmiXAHIFJV6J4lOn3sDiFomsm9pJ6FLFHiRgHMzQut8ojAzuTyO8HRhnvJ-wrZnhv-gObmbhP0X_/s1600/image1-799243.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI-COOacdmW0Yh9A7krwMyRKzyJ8MAvZonOoweytCS7DFAZwZAIanqBD5DX6adsN0HRmiXAHIFJV6J4lOn3sDiFomsm9pJ6FLFHiRgHMzQut8ojAzuTyO8HRhnvJ-wrZnhv-gObmbhP0X_/s320/image1-799243.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6113191018744979810" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmWNtrfETshLY77nDNaeRLArAeK8JQGfaRSlDoi5sLhEesMxzb_AXQiODgcocx2jjkpi0cJrOyW2Byn3YVlRPOpWECldhEZsWiV_x1tRFcl3JgHESy9E3H2ddzSSYEyzkoD701MyPAJtdR/s1600/IMG_4725-703176.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmWNtrfETshLY77nDNaeRLArAeK8JQGfaRSlDoi5sLhEesMxzb_AXQiODgcocx2jjkpi0cJrOyW2Byn3YVlRPOpWECldhEZsWiV_x1tRFcl3JgHESy9E3H2ddzSSYEyzkoD701MyPAJtdR/s320/IMG_4725-703176.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6113191033528504642" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJqZRQ7W2LLiVqKx82FxQN5HE84oy1a5RaKPM_pbrdYFtzDV7d4R0WJZZvY2BYSO34bWIbDBGPkybNjo1a_DkUiNv7x75Mn89tYROkq1SbsucRs75ZO3sYWuebAvnZWTZHnwmAHEsa9qA/s1600/IMG_4726-706229.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJqZRQ7W2LLiVqKx82FxQN5HE84oy1a5RaKPM_pbrdYFtzDV7d4R0WJZZvY2BYSO34bWIbDBGPkybNjo1a_DkUiNv7x75Mn89tYROkq1SbsucRs75ZO3sYWuebAvnZWTZHnwmAHEsa9qA/s320/IMG_4726-706229.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6113191048679537618" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6VjE5dzZsg6m4K4nRwD_2cbawQVbUeyimCZjO8eC0EuqM1zaYK358Zxj0mfjbX1GW5eBvoiRgOSMH8DU04fNtLSQuQ_CmQfXgyK49By17MR1GDwpPUSBD57qTLTuaz3Mm-maKmthpHxb/s1600/IMG_5074-709570.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6VjE5dzZsg6m4K4nRwD_2cbawQVbUeyimCZjO8eC0EuqM1zaYK358Zxj0mfjbX1GW5eBvoiRgOSMH8DU04fNtLSQuQ_CmQfXgyK49By17MR1GDwpPUSBD57qTLTuaz3Mm-maKmthpHxb/s320/IMG_5074-709570.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6113191059582366674" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_2enTXkNr4pxPxybW02SvRbDhpGHpwryxZFM0o66nrC4g8TZnqnhT5FhnmLRJWrgcqii3XbelBidOG-7E_0-Flsk8HT_QxhIV3reqj5VXgxH6_qXwzpwfFeByxq8mbYxBAFf3lmjJJDUQ/s1600/IMG_0167-712413.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_2enTXkNr4pxPxybW02SvRbDhpGHpwryxZFM0o66nrC4g8TZnqnhT5FhnmLRJWrgcqii3XbelBidOG-7E_0-Flsk8HT_QxhIV3reqj5VXgxH6_qXwzpwfFeByxq8mbYxBAFf3lmjJJDUQ/s320/IMG_0167-712413.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6113191072103152258" /></a></p>Two of my very best friends had twins this past year, their birthdays bookend Dax right in the middle. Both of these friends are quilters and Alissa had two little girls just a few weeks after Dax was born. Alissa also has a toddler for whom she has been painstakingly hand piecing a twin sized quilt made of tiny hexagons for over a year. When she got pregnant, we teased her that she was going to have to make another (no, TWO!) twin sized quilts for her new girls.
<br>So instead of giving her a bunch of baby quilts (she still got a lot of them from the other quilty friends), Latifah and Hollie and i collaborated to make two twin sized quilts for the twins. They're bright and scrappy log cabin and log cabin house blocks with I-spy centers to make them fun for the girls.
<br>
<br>The log cabin house one was a pattern that I had made two blocks for my friend, Janice, in BeeHappy a few years ago and had always wanted to revisit. It's such a fun block to make that I may have more in my quilting future still. :)
<br>
<br>I've also included a pic of Dax and the twin girls on another one of their amazing quilts, made by the uber talented Liz Harvatine.libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-55587485576589058822015-02-06T09:12:00.000-08:002015-03-10T09:28:43.952-07:00New jewelry <div class="mobile-photo">

Every once in a while I get the urge to pull out my beads and jewelry making supplies. When I was making a birthday present recently, I really wanted to make something special for the birthday girl... She's a knitter, so I started with some stitch markers made from tourmaline I've hoarded for years... But then the bin with tourmaline also had fluorite and amethyst and this necklace also just sprung out of thin air that night too. Lucky birthday girl!
<br />
The earrings are smoky topaz (oh how I love deepest browns) and pearl... And I'm keeping them. :)libbydibbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14174279926782352881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859330861058263556.post-34214533311079527542015-02-05T14:28:00.001-08:002015-03-10T09:30:39.791-07:00Men Quilters exhibit <div class="mobile-photo">

An artist friend of mine, Luke Haynes recently opened a show at the Craft and Folk Art Museum near my house. It's a show of quilts made by men, and it was a wonderful, very creative and liberating show to see. The emphasis was on the creativity and message and some of the quilts there simply blew my mind. Luke once introduced me to the artist Joe Cunningham, and I was excited to see he also had quilts in the show.<br />

Joe's quilt, the black/white/chartreuse one that I have details of here was so stunningly quilted that I nearly cried with inspiration. There was also another quilter who I had not yet heard of, named Jimmy McBride, who made this Mars moon quilt which took my breath away.<br />

I would have loved to stay so much longer than I did, but alas, I had a date with me names Dax, who was getting a little bit squirrelly by the end... His buddies Dash and Vaughn were also there (since their mom, my girlfriend, Hollie) was there as my real date. We figured that as quilter moms of boys, this was a great way to expose our babies to quilts as art.<br />
